How Māori knowledge can help with climate change

The Māori people of New Zealand have a long and deep relationship with the natural environment and its resources. Over the centuries, they have developed a unique set of practices and beliefs which have enabled them to live in harmony with their environment. In recent years, this traditional Maori knowledge has been increasingly recognised as an invaluable source of insight into the dynamics of climate change and its impacts.

The Māori understanding of the environment is based on the concept of kaitiakitanga (guardianship), which emphasises the importance of protecting and maintaining the natural environment. This concept is reflected in the practice of rāhui, which involves restricting access to certain areas for periods of time in order to allow natural resources to regenerate. This practice has been found to be effective in reducing the impact of climate change on local ecosystems.

Māori also have a strong tradition of sustainability. This is seen in the traditional practice of whanau ora, which is based on the idea of working together to ensure the health and wellbeing of the whole community. This includes a focus on sustainable resource management and the wise use of natural resources.

Māori have a long history of adapting to changing environmental conditions, and this is reflected in their traditional knowledge.
